Heritage Station

It may only be a grape farm, but it’s a very romantic grape farm. I actually had no intention of stopping at Heritage Station in Mullica Hill. Traffic, however, had other plans for me. Sometimes the best stops are accidental. From the outside, Heritage Station struck me more as a friendly farm stand than a [...]

Give Us Some Sugar: Q&A with honey-lover Chef David Guas

David Guas made his name as a pastry chef, but what you might not know is that he is a honey lover. In fact, not just a honey lover, but also a collector. The Louisiana native often spends weekends riding his Harley-Davidson through the Northern Virginia countryside in search of some new local honeys at local farm markets.

Guas spent about 10 years as a corporate pastry chef, working, among other places, at Washington’s DC Coast, started by renowned chef Jeff Tunks. Just last year, Guas won acclaim for his cookbook “DamGoodSweet — Desserts to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth, New Orleans Style” (Taunton Press, 2009), and was a James Beard finalist this spring in the Baking and Dessert Cookbook category.

But don’t pin him down in the pastries. As evidenced by his regular appearances on NBC’s “Today” show, he has a versatile approach and a down-home style.

Coming To A Glass Near You: The Whiskey Road with Eric Smith and Glen Tickle

Eric Smith and Glen Tickle are an unlikely pair. When they met in 2001, Eric was dating Glen’s high school sweetheart, whom Glen would later marry. Awkward.

Eric is the face behind my current obsession, Geekadelphia, while Glen is a comedian and writer from New Jersey.

This month, they spent two weeks traveling the country together exploring The Whiskey Road, a winding trail of historical whiskey sites in America. They visited museums, southern distilleries, key locations in the Whiskey Rebellion, and have been photographing, blogging and tweeting all about it, with the hopes of writing a book about the experience.

Traveling for business, eating for pleasure: New Orleans

I love food. It’s all I eat. If I can experience an area’s local style for most of a week without having to drop anything out of my own wallet, I’ll happily write all the last-minute articles necessary to earn my keep. When I was afforded the opportunity to venture to the New Orleans riverfront for [...]

Visiting P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thang? Pay Your Tab? Please Yelp This?)

The porntastic burger mural inside PYT. Photo by Vincent Brown While overseas, I was constantly intrigued by how many of my favorite bloggers and publications were talking about this burger joint in the Piazza. The photos showed a mod-looking bar, bright green and orange decor, and a back room for parties and Rock Band shenanigans. The glass [...]

My Foodie Idol (or “Why I Do What I Do”)

At her most notorious, Ruth Reichl’s very presence in Manhattan brought restaurateurs into such a state of agitation that cautionary memos circulated around kitchens: “Watch out for this woman. Unruly hair. Smiles a lot.”
